An Ideal Safari Season in the Okavango

This year, Botswana’s famed Okavango Delta experienced the most favorable water conditions in recent history, according to Michael Gregurich of Sanctuary Retreats. The entire area has transformed into an Eden bursting with life.

Ordinarily, mokoro (dugout canoe) safaris become more limited after October, when the floodwaters traditionally recede from the smaller channels. In this exceptional year, however, Gregurich expects mokoro safaris at Sanctuary Chief’s Camp to be possible through the end of December. It’s a rare opportunity to penetrate sections of the delta that are normally inaccessible for the last three months of the year.

Mokoro safaris are also available at Jao Camp, set on its own island.
