John Rendall of ‘A Lion Called Christian’ Fame Returns to Joy’s Camp and Elsa’s Kopje

 

John Rendall will visit Joy’s Camp (Shaba National Reserve) and Harper-recommended Elsa’s Kopje (Meru National Park) in Kenya this February to share his stories, photographs and memories of Joy and George Adamson, and his own story, which is closely related to these magnificent places.

In 1969, Australians Rendall and Anthony Bourke purchased a lion cub from London’s Harrods department store for 260 pounds. After living in London for a year with his new owners, Christian the Lion was eventually integrated into the wilds of Kenya’s Kora National Reserve by George Adamson of “Born Free” fame. Documentary footage of the reunion of Christian the Lion with John Rendall and Anthony Bourke a year after his release eventually became a viral sensation (see below).
