Lavish and ecologically sensitive lodge on Benguerra Island in the marine reserve of Bazaruto National Park, a 20-minute helicopter ride from Vilanculos. Islanders built the majority of the resort using indigenous materials, and the public areas are decorated in a dramatic modern-African idiom. The 16 spacious villas come with plunge pools and lounging salas. Built on low stilts over the sand, they have cedar decks and outdoor showers. Interiors have eucalyptus floors, rattan window shades, ceiling fans, subtle lighting, and furnishings that are a mix of Mozambique and Milan. Large dressing rooms lead to expansive baths with open showers, extra-long tubs and twin white marble vanities. Guests gather for drinks in the Star Bar, while delicious dinners are served in a different location each evening. The principal amenity is a small spa; also superb array of activities, from scuba diving to crocodile-spotting on the island’s freshwater lake.
