Splendid sanctuary along the shores of Lake Wakatipu with a majestic backdrop of snowcapped peaks, a scenic 45-minute drive from Queenstown. Handsome lakeview rooms and Lodge/Chalet junior suites comprise the 12 distinctive accommodations, the suites having stone fireplaces, extra-spacious baths (steam showers, soaking tubs) and huge private terraces. The stone-and-timber main lodge is dominated by an atmospheric Great Room with beamed ceilings, massive rock fireplaces and towering picture windows; also wood-paneled bar-lounge, game room pub and sophisticated meal venues ranging from a formal dining room and wine cellar to a sunset-facing terrace. Fitness gym (plus spa therapist), 60-foot outdoor lap pool, bush walks, horseback riding, jet boating and guided lake/wilderness river fly-fishing. No children under age 10.

We stayed at Blanket Bay for four days in mid-March. It was a wonderful property - as fine as any I have ever visited. The staff are always helpful but never intrusive. Since it's a bit out of the way, breakfast and dinner are included. The meals were well-prepared, with a menu changing nightly - a real plus when you're there several days. The night sky was breathtaking with no ambient city lights to dilute the view. The staff helped with all aspects of the visit - arranging helicopter flights, appointments with local artists, etc.
I was disappointed to see that the lodge is not included in the 2010 Alliance book I received last week. I don't know whose decision this was, but it certainly shouldn't have been Harper's.
