Attractive boutique hotel with an imaginative contemporary style in the heart of downtown Santa Barbara near the shopping and cultural district. Handsome lobby has terra-cotta tiles, handpainted beams and a striking mix of antique furniture and modern art. The 97 recently refurbished accommodations reflect the colorful Spanish and Moroccan elements of the Canary Islands; opt for a more spacious suite on the higher floors facing the mountains. An extremely comfortable junior suite featured a small separate living area, a four-poster bed, dark hardwood floors and all of the expected modern amenities. The smallish bath was nicely tiled, well-lit and provided a walk-in shower and a soaking tub. An elegant yet animated restaurant serves local market-inspired dishes, with an emphasis on fish. Expansive rooftop terrace offers a wonderful panoramic view, pool, fireplace and whirlpool; also in-room spa treatments and access to next-door gym.

Santa Barbara is beautiful and the Canary Hotel is a great hotel in a downtown location. The gym next door is a nice plus (much better than typical hotel gyms) and it's great to be able to walk to downtown restaurants and shopping on State street is literally right outside the door. The hotel's patio is beautiful and offers great views of the city and mountains. However, I'd like to point out that although beautiful the patio is used for weddings. Both times I used it, there was a wedding planner with a wedding party walking through the steps of the ceremony. The patio was then subsequently unavailable due to an actual wedding. Additionally, there was a guest smoking cigars on the patio which was really unpleasant. Not sure if the hotel is able to manage this better but it's something that should be pointed out either upon check-in or upon reservation. May 2011
