This meticulously restored mining town resort is situated in a pristine valley not far from Telluride. Each of the 13 original hand-hewn wood cabins is individually decorated: “Dolores” has a painted wedding bed from Rajasthan; “Vertical Log” has a gorgeous Native American robe hanging on a wall. At the heart of the property, the Saloon is a convivial gathering spot for drinks and outstanding meals. Guests may soak in the 105-degree natural springs, and the property also has a spa, library and fitness room. Activities include fly-fishing, hiking, biking, climbing and horseback riding in summer, and ice climbing, snowshoeing and cross-country skiing in winter. Families are welcome, and the whole town can be booked for groups.

Dolores Cabin, from $1,300 for two; Vertical Log Cabin, from $1,700 for two (all meals and house beverages included; lower winter/spring rates available).

Dunton Hot Springs.  We have to give Dunton mixed reviews.  On the positive side, the site itself is great; the cabin exteriors are charming, and the interior decoration is excellent - in keeping with the cabin atmosphere.  The owners have constructed a fascinating small library; and their own home looks dramatic from the outside.  There are good hiking trails, and the staff was uniformly attentive and friendly.  On the other hand, the remodeling of the cabins does not (or at least it did not in our cabin, Major Ross) include appropriately-sized bathrooms.  The bathroom in Major Ross reminded me of a cheap airport motel, where there is no room for your stuff.  We had three suppers at Dunton. One was excellent; the other two were really below par. There were reasons for that: on our first night, we shared the resort with a large wedding party, and our meal (separate from the large party) appeared to be made up of leftovers from the previous day's serviings. On the second night, we were told that the main-dish scallops were spoiled, and the substitute was overcooked beef. All understandable, but not what you'd expect for $1100 a night. July 2011

Dear Andrew Harper Member,

My name is Edoardo Rossi, and I am the General Manager here at Dunton Hot Springs. I sincerely apologize for the problems you experienced during your stay, and appreciate you sharing your thoughts regarding your visit.

I was surprised to hear of your disappointment in the Major Ross cabin, as this is our second most requested cabin, and the most requested from repeat guests. We are going to be making some changes to Major Ross this winter by adding an extension on the back of the cabin, which will house a large tub (to be filled directly from the source of the hot springs). An extension to the bathroom, if you will.

The scallop issue was unfortunate, and I am very sorry you had to experience this. The issue was one of those situations where a last minute decision had to be made, and I did not want to offer our guests a bad meal experience where a product was below par. Additionally, I am never willing to do anything that jeopardizes the safety of our guests. I am sorry to hear our “backup plan” did not meet your expectations.

I strongly feel the problems you experienced were unusual rather than the norm, and if you would consider revisiting Dunton Hot Springs you would have a greatly improved experience. Based on all other Andrew Harper reviews of our resort, I believe this is evident. It is our hope you will give us that opportunity, and you may contact me directly to make the arrangements.

Once again, our sincerest apologies for not fully meeting your expectations. Thank you for taking the time to detail your experience. We will use your observations positively, and hope to see you at Dunton Hot Springs again soon.

Edoardo Rossi

Magical Place is a good description! I remember sitting on my little porch after a light summer rain, watching a double rainbow over the mountains and I could actually smell the evergreen trees near by because the air was so clean.

We recently enjoyed a three-night stay at Dunton and are already planning our return trip. It's hard to describe, this place is just sucks you in.

We just spent 5 nights at Dunton Hot Springs and our stay was incredible! Dunton's spectacular setting is just one of its features. The food is just amazing - every meal of it - and the staff could not be any kinder and more welcoming.

Housekeeping and turn-down service is a bit inconsistent though. For example when we arrived it appeared as though our cabin's cleaning effort had been interrupted. However, the rest of the service very much makes up for any house keeping's short-comings.

Dunton is truly a magical place. We can't wait to go back.
