View Map

Engaging wilderness refuge dramatically sited above the Golfo Dulce in an isolated corner of the Osa Peninsula at the southern tip of Costa Rica, an hour by air from San José. Sixteen fan-cooled (no A/C, telephone or Internet) thatched bungalows set on a steep hillside are outfitted simply with netted windows, two queen beds, a tiled shower-bath and a garden patio; higher room numbers mean a longer and steeper climb to the main building. Open-air restaurant/bar pavilion has a platform for viewing monkeys and a dazzling array of parrots, toucans and scarlet macaws. Small clifftop swimming pool, plus naturalist-guided jungle/shoreline safaris, therapeutic massages, guided horseback rides and sea kayaking. No children under age 5.

Lapa Rios is exceptional. Our last visit there was 15 years ago. It was supurb then. They have done nothing but improve in all aspects of hospitality. We recommend highly.

We recently spent 5 nights at Lapa Rios. Some aspects of the visit were wonderful. They included the beautiful main lodge, the wonderful food and the knowledgeable guides and terrific tours. On the other hand, the waiters and front desk staff were quite amateur. For example, often our dinner meals (which you order at breakfast) started to come to the table before we had been asked if we wanted a beverage. The bartender was poor. No one among the front desk staff could speak in english sufficiently well to give us a clear description of the tours and trips, for example. Almost all of the towels left in our rooms were mildew, which was pretty awful. Our room, number 10, was far and, more important, on a very steep path from the main lodge. While we're fit physically it would have been better if the lodge had asked us before we arrived whether we could and wanted to make that long hike several times a day (before we went on a hike). The nearby beaches were lovely to look at but so rocky and full of sand crabs that swimming was out of the question. We've been members of Hideaway for decades. This is the first bum steer we've received from you. We wouldn't recommend Lapa Rios without a number of caveats.
