Splendid new multi-peaked ski-in/ski- out lodge next to the high-speed Empire Express lift. Attractive public areas include the Vista Lounge, a sweeping space with dark wood floors, a raftered ceiling, large stone fireplace, intimate seating and dramatic vistas. One spacious suite came with a dark wood trim, brown leather furniture and gas fireplaces in the sitting area and bedroom, which also had a small balcony. Luxuriously large bath offered a tub and separate shower. Book “Vista” or “Peak” category for the best views. “Mountain Hosts” help with ski needs; also on-site outfitter. Lovely Spa Montage has a striking indoor pool and a full range of treatments. Of several dining/lounge options, standout Apex features a menu that takes it cues from the produce of the West and the Rockies.
November 2011 Hideaway Report
The Montage Deer Valley also opened in December 2010. An imposing multi-peaked lodge, it echoes the majesty of the surrounding mountains. The public spaces are on a grand scale, the Vista Lounge being a sweeping space with a raftered ceiling and a stone fireplace. Check-in takes place in a stately rotunda with curved staircases and a large chandelier. The walls of the resort are decorated with Western art and Audubon prints.
Our spacious suite came with dark wood trim, brown leather furniture and a table for four in front of a gas fireplace. The bedroom was eminently comfortable, with a gas fireplace and small balcony. The bath was luxuriously large with a tub, separate shower and heated floors. Be sure to book in either the “Vista” or the “Peak” category on the higher floors to ensure a good view.
The Montage is a true ski-in/ski-out resort, being right next to the high-speed Empire Express lift. “Mountain Hosts” are invariably on hand to help with ski equipment while you take a break for a hot chocolate on the Alpine Pool terrace. On-site Compass Sports has a full selection of equipment, and we found the staff most helpful. The Spa Montage offers a stunning indoor pool, plus a full range of treatments, the most appealing to me being the gentleman’s hot-towel facial.
Apex, the standout among the Montage’s restaurants, has a menu that takes its cues from the produce of the West and the Rockies, and without question my favorite dish was a wonderful bison ribeye with oven-roasted tomatoes, a leek purée and roasted garlic whipped potatoes. (The other main restaurant, Daly’s Pub, is in a windowless space below ground.)
Service was friendly and professional throughout our stay. Frankly, it is hard to choose between the Montage and The St. Regis. Both are excellent in their respective ways. However, at The St. Regis, the architecture seems more deferential to the splendor of the mountain scenery.
Vista Room, from $1,145; Peak Room, from $1,315.
