Just returned from 3 night stay in "Upper Coast House" (#121 "F. Post"), with "filtered" ocean view. Our first visit. Extremely beautiful, serene, setting. Property was completely full, so no Harper upgrade available at check-in. Our unit surrounded by fragrant redwoods but still with view of the Pacific. Very friendly staff, and service was almost completely unobtrusive and well coordinated. The included breakfast buffet was excellent. Lunch and Dinner are 4 course prix fix ($40 lunch, $110 dinner pp w/o beverage), and in this remote location there are no alternatives (with the exception of Ventana across Highway 1 which we did not try). While the food was excellent, the dinner menu offered only 4 entrees, and only 1 entree changed each evening. The complementary in-room 'mini-bar' was sparse, mainly coffee, fresh fruit, a few snacks, and one bottle of wine. The room was very private and comfortable except that the combination shower and whirlpool tub was not separate (no door) from the remainder of the room. The management is proud that there are no TVs and NO clocks in the rooms, by design. If you don't want to rely on a wake-up call to avoid missing a flight, take along your own alarm clock. Overall a wonderful peaceful experience. (reminded us of the "old" Blackberry Farm, in the days when children were not allowed) We look forward to returning.

The Post Ranch Inn lived up to all the hype. Amazing setting, delicious food, attentive but barely noticeable staff. I hope to return someday!

No wonder you rated this #1! It was perfect in every way. We chose to eat at the restaurant there 3 out of 4 nights because of the food, service and ambiance. Wonderful, friendly staff; beautiful grounds. It doesn’t get any better than this--we will definitely tell friends and can't wait to return. A+++

Post Ranch Inn continues to be one of my favorite US hotels. The service is incredible from start to finish, the food is excellent, the rooms are very nice and the setting is so beautiful and peaceful that I'm always reluctant to leave.

We've been to PRI at least 20 times! PRI is a "state of mind" engaing the senses: sight/unparalled views, smell/scents planted around you, sound/quiet but for the wind, taste/Sierra Mar. True, the rooms are small (but cozy) and the expansion has eroded some quietude. Nothing is perfect, but PRI is as good as it gets!

"Post Ranch Inn was unbelievable. Was debating between Post Ranch and Ventana and Patty at Harper suggested I try Post Ranch. After staying at Post Ranch and visiting Ventana and having dinner over at Ventana too, I would add our two cents that the two weren't even close in comparison and so glad Patty leaned towards Post Ranch - just magical and one of the best places ever." I just returned from Post Ranch Inn a couple weeks ago, and I was a bit disappointed in the hotel. I was in a Coast House, and while the setting and view were beautiful, the room was rather small and plain and extremely expensive. Service was excellent, and food at the restaurant was very good -- both for breakfast and dinner. I stayed at better hotels on my California trip for half the price, including Auberge's Calistoga Inn.

The folks at PRI have never been friendlier or more helpful. I'd like to hope that they are always that way, but I'm sure that being a client of AH helped. June 2011

Sierra Mar restaurant is one of my favorite in the world. Everything they do is equisite.

I have been to both, and am planning to return to the region.  Just wonder what other travelers think of the two properties.  Obviously Post Ranch is more expensive.  I think it's worth it, given the location, uniqueness of the rooms etc., and think the food is great, but am curious if others agree.  I haven't been back to either since the fires.
