Sophisticated 500-acre cottage-style resort in the leafy foothills of Montecito, just outside Santa Barbara. A new owner has recently invested $100 million to restore the historic property. Landscaped grounds contain 41 handsome lodgings in 18 peaked-roof cottages, many with generous sitting areas, working fireplaces and private patios, some with hot tubs. “Willow,” “Oak Grove” and “Wisteria” are very special, along with premium cottages such as “Eucalyptus” and romantic “Gardenia.” Dining venues include the award-winning indoor/outdoor Stonehouse restaurant and a bistro-bar. Amenities include a heated outdoor pool, tennis courts, a fitness studio and in-room massage and spa treatments.

We were just there about 3 weeks ago for the first time since the redo (last 10 years ago) and just loved it. We were there 2 nights before going to Post Ranch Inn and loved our time. It was relaxing, the pool was great, the weather fantastic, and the food great. Can't wait to go back.

Our room, the service, the amenities and the food at San Ysidro Ranch were all wonderful as they have been in the past.

It's so frustrating when you find so many people enjoy that flawless experience: upgrades, great, seamless service, perfection across the board...and then you feel as if you're the only one who is out of whack with the majority of other voices. It perplexes me when a world class hotel or resort drops the ball and misses the mark in so many ways and yet, they defend their position oftentimes by quoting how happy other guests have been. It makes you wonder...why me? Or what are the other people getting that I'm not or maybe we just have different standards. Lately, if i recall, Mr. Harper had an atypical experience at Le Bristol in Paris. I'm with Afarag. Why experience such disappointment? Part of a reputation a great scoring property is a consistency the property does not have a "right" from which to feet so far off course.. At these prices, there is something wrong when quality is replaced with indifference.

Recently went to San Ysidro Ranch with my wife for a 5 night stay. We used a wedding in Santa Barbara as an excuse to stay at San Ysidro Ranch and unwind. The property is nicely hidden in the hills and provides the perfect venue for a peaceful getaway. Each room/cottage is unique, and ours was no exception. The swimming pool sits nicely tucked at the back of the property, and provides a very peaceful retreat. The exercise room sites by the pool, and is average at best, requiring an upgrade.

As important as the venue is, the service level should at least equal, if not exceed expectations. This is where the San Ysidro Ranch failed miserably. The service staff was disconnected and seemed absent.

Immediately after arrival, a request for a radio for our room took over two hours to be fulfilled, and required a phone call for a reminder.

A morning room service order was "lost", and breakfast arrived 90 minutes after the order was placed (and after a phone call to inquire). When the room service order arrived, specific dietary requests made were not honored, and we had to send it back, only to wait another 35 minutes for it to be delivered again.

Evening turndown was not performed twice during our 5 night stay.

Hotel did nothing to rectify situation, leaving my wife and I a little bothered by their non-chalant responses. After returning home, I contacted hotel senior management to follow up and inform them of their deficiencies. I barely got an apology.

Overall, I believe the San Ysidro Ranch is succeeding based on long time reputation. I will never go back, and will not recommend to friends. Sorry...

That is appalling. I just stayed there for 3 nights earlier in February, and the service was superb. I am so sorry you had such a bad experience!

Just reading reviews and have to say I agree with both sides., negative and positive. My wife and I stayed for three days last September with our two dogs. Yes I said 2 dogs and not little ones but basset hounds. The hotel was over the top with accommodating them . There own beds and bowls, etc. The cottage was fantastic and food excellent. Having said that , as others have expressed , the service level seems non chalant. But still one of our favorite hideaways in the world.
