This once-dilapidated 1890s enclave has been authentically rebuilt as a gracious wilderness retreat in a peaceful box canyon midway between Aspen and Telluride, overlooked by some of the highest peaks in the Rockies. Accommodations consist of four cozy cabins and a two-story log guesthouse with five bedrooms. Families may wish to consider the wonderful River Cabin, situated on a high bank above a tumbling stream (suitable for six people). The main lodge evokes the Old West with a massive stone fireplace, plank floors, deep leather sofas and a fine array of Native American artifacts. Excellent cuisine is served in the cozy fireside dining room and a canvas-topped open-air pavilion. Daytime diversions focus on half-day and full-day horseback rides through picturesque meadows and along trails ascending to more than 12,000 feet; guests also enjoy guided hikes and excellent fly-fishing for trout on streams, ponds and the nearby Gunnison River (famed for its mid-June salmon fly hatch).

Smith Fork is definitely well worth the effort it takes to get there. Its located in a beautiful canyon, at the base of the impressive Needle Rock, adjacent to the Smith Fork of the Gunnison River. Great fly fishing, horseback riding, hiking. Lots of activities for kids. The meals were all amazing, and the wine list extensive. Have to say the most impressive thing about Smith Fork was the staff. Everyone went out of their way to make all feel welcome and have a terrific trip. They do a good job! Don't miss a float trip down the Black Canyon of the Gunnison. Big fish and big rocks! Beautiful.
