The St. Regis San Francisco

I offer a dissenting view on this hotel. The lobby feels like a cold office building; no charm, somewhat frenzied with a lot of noise, few comfortable sitting areas, not a single calm area to sit with friends or clients and have a peaceful conversation. We spent literally no time there, it was so uninviting. We had a deluxe room, a corner room (we rejected the first two they showed us because, for example, the desk was at the wall, and I had business there so didn't relish sitting with the wall 3' in front of me all day); the room was sterile, the decor very "minimalist" in the sense of little detail, dull materials, uncomfortable chairs that look nice to the decorator but are unpleasant for the room client. The bathroom missed certain important little details -- example, the bath had no grip handles for getting in or out, and because the shelf surface around it was marble, it was too slippery to use for leverage when getting out. San Francisco, oddly, as such a sensual city, has no great hotel,s but the Four Seasons is a much better place. These are inevitably matters of taste of course (see the two favorable reviews above), but I found this to be a cold, antiseptic, very unpleasant envrionment.
