Distinguished 316-room hotel near the French Quarter, formerly an Orient-Express property. Acquired by local businesspeople in 2009, it has been the subject of a comprehensive $22 million restoration. Rooms and suites have been upgraded, and redecorated in a traditional English style with French accents to reflect the city’s heritage. Chef Drew Dzejak has garnered praise for his modern American cuisine with Southern influences in The Grill Room; also new Cocktail Bar, outdoor pool and fitness center. New spa.
The 316-room Windsor Court Hotel is located in the Central Business District just outside the French Quarter. Since it has long been a Harper-recommended property, I was keen to see whether its recent sale by Orient-Express had had any noticeable effect.
My first impression was positive: Snap-to staff greeted us the moment we alighted from the taxi, dispatched our bags efficiently, and checked us in with polished and friendly professionalism. Our room was on one of the Club floors, which have dedicated concierge service and a lounge with a sweeping view of the Mississippi. Traditional furniture, cheerful yellow walls, English countryside prints, easy-to-use lights and an inviting window seating area combined to create a thoroughly congenial environment. The marble bath was equipped with a combined tub/shower, but despite being well- maintained, it was in need of modernization. Throughout our stay, service on the Club floor was polite and attentive.
When the hotel opened in 1984, The Grill Room excited much praise and garnered prizes both local and national. Later, the luster began to fade. I am pleased to report that under the supervision of new chef Drew Dzejak, the restaurant’s reputation has been substantially restored. A starter of rabbit ragout on pappardelle pasta and a main course of seared Louisiana grouper with a side of Parmesan risotto were both utterly delicious. With its striking murals of Louisiana scenes, the dining room is one of the most handsome in the city — though the carpeting needs repair or replacement in some areas — and the adjacent Polo Club Lounge remains one of our favorite places in New Orleans for a civilized drink. The hotel’s principal amenity is a large outdoor pool, which is attractively landscaped and is still a welcome refuge from the city’s heat and humidity.
Deluxe Room, from $350; Club Room, from $505.
