After decades of upheaval, Cambodia has emerged as a poor but peaceful nation blessed with great natural beauty, hospitable inhabitants and some of the most awe-inspiring temple architecture in the world. The golden age of Angkor Wat came at the end of the 12th century. Abandoned in 1431, it slowly disappeared into the jungle, only to be rediscovered in 1860 by Frenchman Henri Mouhot. At least three days are required to appreciate fully the majestic complex. Travelers who wish to experience contemporary life in Cambodia should spend two or three nights in the French-flavored capital of Phnom Penh (an hour by air southeast of Siem Reap). It is not a particularly extensive city, and most of the major sights, such as the Royal Palace, Silver Pagoda and National Museum of Arts, can conveniently be visited within a single day.
