A nation of 700 low-lying islands (most uninhabited), the Bahamas can boast some of the finest beaches on earth, lapped by crystalline waters. The diving and saltwater fly-fishing are world-class. Although the weather is warm and pleasant for much of the year, it is important to remember that the Bahamas are generally much cooler during the January and February winter high season than are the Leeward and Windward Caribbean islands 750 miles to the south.
WHEN TO GO : The weather is warm and sunny year-round. November-April is drier, cooler and less humid than on the Caribbean islands to the south.
CURRENCY : Bahamian dollar (B$). The Bahamian dollar is set at par with the U.S. dollar.
U.S. EMBASSY : Nassau, Tel. 322-1181.
DIRECT DIAL CODES : To phone hotels in the Bahamas, dial 1 + 242 (Bahamas code) + local numbers in listings.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS : Passport. Visit travel.state.gov, and for travelers’ health information, cdc.gov.

Hello,
During my recent trip to Harbour Island, my travel plans were thrown into a cocked hat when Bahamasair rescheduled flights from Nassau to North Eleuthera at the very last minute, a common occurence with this airline. Ultimately, I had to purchase a new homeward ticket with Continental, since the rescheduled homeward flight did not correspond to my connection in Nassau.
Lesson learned: Bahamasair may be less expensive than other carriers, but it's not very reliable; the next time I head for Harbour island, I'll go with Continental all the way.

consider southern air charter..from nassau to north eleuthra...a quasi commercial /private airline that is far more dependable and can book via internet and fares are comparable to bahamasair
Hello...Could anyone recommend a subdued, child friendly resort that caters to both adults and children. It does not have to be overrun with activities. Would prefer something on the small side in beautiful setting and a nice selection of activites.
Would be traveling late April....is this a good time?
Many thanks for your help.
Dear Nellie,
You might consider the Ocean Club, a Harper-recommended resort set at the eastern end of Paradise Island. This sophisticated resort is sure to please the adults in your group, but it also offers supervised children's programs as well.
Late April is a fine time to head to the Bahamas. You should be just outside the peak season, and you're avoiding hurricane season by quite a wide berth.

Any recent stays at the Ocean Club? Planning a trip with my husband in March and considering it. I'm afraid it's not "special" enough for our annual romantic trip without our two very young children. We usually do Casa Que Canta, Las Ventanas. Considered Amanyara but think the $2000+ room rates are too high for us this year...
Any feedback would be so appreciated!
One more thought...the Rosewood Mayakoba is romantic as well. The rooms are gorgeous, the grounds are spectacular and there are many dining options. There are also two pools and one the prettier one is usually empty because it is farther away from the beach. Good luck with your planning!
We have been to both Las Ventanas and the Ocean Club. They are similar in quality. The Ocean Club has the benefit of having Atlantis down the road (far enough away though so you are away from the crowds) which gives you the option of many dining options in addition to the restaurants available at the hotel. It also has a casino if you are interested in gambling. The pool area is very pretty (although it doesn't overlook the ocean). Be sure you stay in the more expensive rooms. The less expensive ones are located in an area that may be noisy. The beach is a bit narrow, but pretty. We found the people to be extremely service minded and friendly.
Las Ventanas is slightly more "romantic" but I would not hesitate to recommend The Ocean Club. It is one of the destinations we are considering for our annual trip ourselves!
