Bermuda is a 20-square-mile island located in the Gulf Stream that first became popular more than a century ago when well-to-do New Englanders sought refuge from the rigors of harsh northern winters. The island was relatively close to the great East Coast cities, a critical factor in the days before rapid air travel and the development of stylish resorts in the Caribbean and Mexico. Nowadays, of course, winter vacationers want more than just a temperate climate, opting instead for tropical destinations where they can take a morning dip in the ocean and breakfast outdoors with the hummingbirds. To enjoy that privilege in Bermuda, you must visit between May and October. That said, Bermuda remains a distinctive place of quiet beauty that can lend itself well to a relaxing midsummer/autumn escape.
WHEN TO GO : Bermuda’s location in the Gulf Stream gives it a subtropical climate. Showers occur throughout the year. Spring and fall are the most pleasant seasons. In winter, the sea is too cold for swimming.
CURRENCY : Bermuda dollar (B$). Set rate valued at about B$1.00 = US$1.00 as of March 2012. U.S. currency readily accepted.
U.S. EMBASSY : None. Consulate, Tel. 295-1342.
DIRECT DIAL CODES : To phone hotels in Bermuda, dial 1 + 441 (Bermuda code) + local numbers in listings.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS : Passport. Visit travel.state.gov, and for travelers’ health information, cdc.gov.

I am looking for recommendations for dining on Bermuda. We especially like restaurants on the water. My husband and I will be there for a week in early August.
We just returned from a four night "Villa" stay at Tucker's Point Hotel and SPA. Food and ambiance at the Beach Club on the water is good. Take the shuttle from the Hotel entrance and travel 1.4 miles to the Beach Club on the Atlantic. It may be for residences only so please check first.
Hello,
We thoroughly enjoyed our trip to Bermuda earlier this year and are happy to recommend the following places to eat.
Just across the harbor from Hamilton, Beau Rivage (27 Harbour Road; 232-8686) in the Newstead Belmont Hills resort has spectacular views across the water of Hamilton and a perfect vantage point for watching the sunset on its big terrace (which has become a lively after-work spot for that reason). The menu is classic French, done with flair.
At the Elbow Beach resort (60 South Shore Road), you'll find two appealing options. The just-renovated Lido (236-9884) is a superb restaurant right above the beach with the attendant spectacular views (be sure to book a window table). Mediterranean influences abound on the menu. Right on the sand at Elbow Beach, Mickey's (236-9107) has a casual menu of big salads, pastas and grilled items that has made it one of the most popular restaurants on the island.
At The Reefs, Coconuts (56 South Shore Road; 238-0222) is beachside, and its tables are among the most coveted on the island for the view, the excellent drinks and the casual but wonderful and varied menu.
Although you stated a preference for restaurants on the water, we would be remiss if we left out this one. Reputed to be the oldest restaurant on Bermuda (it dates to 1652) Tom Moore's Tavern (Walsingham Lane; 293-8020) is charm incarnate, with several intimate dining rooms and a patio for outdoor dining. Adding greatly to the experience is the courtly manager, Bruno Fiocca, who will greet you in dinner jacket with black waistcoat and offer a warm handshake. The menu is Continental, with service tableside (plates are heated on a little burner before dishes are served).
We hope you enjoy Bermuda as much as we did!
Regards,
Andrew Harper
