Poland

Poland

Overview

From Andrew Harper

Now that memberships in the European Union and NATO have provided a sense of security, perhaps the demons of Poland’s terrible history can be exorcised and the talents of its gifted population released. Poland is a country of immense beauty: the Baltic seacoast; the lake districts bordering Lithuania and Belarus; the ancient forests of the middle country; the Carpathian mountain ranges to the south. Most visitors are drawn to Kraków, which rivals Prague and Budapest in medieval splendor. A three-hour train ride south of Warsaw, this romantic baroque city (spared by the Axis during World War II) is a treasure trove of Polish art and architecture.

CLIMATE: The climate of Poland is quite consistent, although it is generally cooler as you move east and south. Winters are long, and summers are showery.

U.S. EMBASSY: Warsaw, Tel. (22) 504-2000. There is also a consulate in Kraków, Tel. (12) 424-5100.

In Krakow another great hotel is 'Pod Roza' (Under the Rose), owned by the same family as Hotel Stary and Copernicus. It has a wonderful Italian-inspired feel and very cozy interiors. Worth a try as a change from the, also wonderful, Hotel Stary.

To be perfectly honest, Poland wasn't at the top of my list, but my wife wanted to see Krakow, so we added a week in Poland to our recent trip to Central Europe, and it was absolutely fascinating. We bought a Polish rail pass to get around, and if the trains were slow, they were also clean and always on time--ultimately a nice way to travel. I'd also suggest adding Torun to the usual Warsaw, Krakow, Gdansk itinerary--it's a great little city and is Copernicus's hometown. And by all means visit Malbork Castle, which is spectacular.
