Mr. Harper's favorite hotels & resorts from the past year of travel
Amanera, Belle Mont Farm
As well as a visit to the idyllic island of St. Barths, a tiny patch of France outré-mer that is beloved by Hideaway Report readers, I ventured farther afield to St. Kitts, to experience the innovative Kittitian Hill development, and the Dominican Republic, to stay at the world’s 29th Aman resort.
Cabrera, Dominican Republic
With a clifftop pavilion-like main structure, ornamented with reflecting pools and a gorgeous infinity pool, this thoroughly contemporary resort nonetheless blends with the jungle-covered hillsides rising from the adjacent sweep of a golden sand beach. Our Casita, done in the same dramatic style, gave us every comfort. With the glorious views, the stunning beach, a world-class golf course and a prevailing atmosphere of tranquility, Amanera was a highlight of my traveling year.

Belle Mont Farm
Basseterre, St. Kitts
The fact that I enthusiastically recommend a Caribbean resort that is not on a white-sand beach is a testament to my esteem. Belle Mont Farm is part of the ambitious Kittitian Hill development, situated on the side of a dormant volcano overlooking the sea. Our hillside clapboard-and-shingle-roof cottage proved to be a place where we felt fully cossetted. With a large oceanview deck and private pool as well as facilities for watching full-screen videos, it made us reluctant to leave, even for the distinctive farm-to-table cuisine in the restaurant. Did we miss being on a beach? Not once.
