The Czech Republic comprises the historic regions of Bohemia and Moravia, as well as parts of Silesia. Bohemia contains about two-thirds of its total population. The St. George Forest is located in Central Bohemia, about 35 miles northeast of Prague. The name is said to be derived from that of a nearby monastery that provided protection to travelers. Today, the region offers numerous cycling and walking trails, as well as fishing, hunting and cross-country skiing. The forest is famous throughout the Czech Republic for its wild mushrooms. North of the forest is the Český ráj, or “Bohemian Paradise.” This region of dramatic rock spires and half-ruined castles receives little press in the United States, but it makes for an unforgettable day trip.
