La Rioja and Ribera del Duero in northwestern Spain produce many of the country’s finest wines. Several hotels and bodegas have been designed or extended by some of the world’s most illustrious architects. These include Santiago Calatrava’s stunning Bodegas Ysios in Laguardia and the late Zaha Hadid’s addition to the venerable Bodegas R. López de Heredia Viña Tondonia in Haro. Like the most celebrated Riojas, wines from the Ribera del Duero derive mainly from red grapes, notably Tinto Fino — Tempranillo — the dominant red variety in northern Spain. A Madrid-Ribera del Duero-La Rioja-Basque Country itinerary would be an ideal oenophile road trip.
