Le Grotte della Civita

91 Editor Rating
Scale of 90-100

Dramatic cave hotel owned by Swedish-Italian architect Daniele Kihlgren that offers a curated experience of cave living in the spectacular town of Matera. Common areas include a candlelit reception area and the Cripta della Civita, an ancient church now renovated but retaining its original features. The 18 unique guest accommodations, each in their own grotto, preserve the authentic rusticity of the experience with minimal furnishings, dim lighting, stone walls, vaulted ceilings and terra-cotta tile floors (no TVs or phones). Cave 4 includes a large bath with open shower and dual vanities in one grotto and, in another grotto, an egg-shaped Philippe Starck-designed soaking tub. Excellent restaurant for regional fare (advance reservations required). Cooking courses and in-room spa treatments can be arranged.
