Our Review of La Bastide de Gordes:
Recently reopened after a $35 million renovation, this dramatically sited hotel boasts panoramas of the Vaucluse from a series of ancient buildings perched on the former ramparts of the medieval hill town of Gordes. With vaulted passageways and arcades lined with boutiques, the narrow cobblestone streets of the village climb to a rocky pinnacle crowned by a château. The 33 spacious refurbished rooms and six suites, three of which offer private terraces, are decorated in a refined 18th-century style with handpainted beamed ceilings, wood paneling and original artwork. Excellent new restaurant overseen by Pierre Gagnaire serves contemporary Mediterranean seasonal cuisine on a terrace facing the valley or in a dining room with stone vaulted ceilings; also 8,600-square-foot Sisley spa with Turkish bath, sauna, steam room, gym, Jacuzzi, indoor pool and 50-foot heated outdoor pool.
